Speaker: Dr. Joe Garner
Topic: Behavior, Enrichment and Welfare: First Principles and Real Solutions for Laboratory Mice
This session will introduce the audience to the range and adaptability of normal behavior in wild mice, and the central role these behaviors play in adapting to harsh environments. In particular we will explore thermal stress in rodents and the challenges and rewards of designing a nesting enrichment that mice will actually use!
We will then expand the discussion to consider the impact of modern mouse husbandry on behavior, the limitations this places on mice’s ability to cope with the stress of captivity. We will use this perspective to assess mouse housing and enrichment from the mouse’s point of view. Consequences for well-being and scientific validity will be explored.
The goal of the session to is to get to know the mouse from a new perspective, and to provide audience members with a rationale, arguments, and examples to help with the implementation of enrichment in their home institutions.
