Animal Care Supervisor - Animal Resource Facility

Position Summary:
This position works closely with the Animal Resources Program Manager to coach, train, and lead the animal care staff. Key responsibilities include providing daily oversight of staff, conducting facility orientation and training for research personnel, coordinating space assignments to support specific research projects, recruiting animal care staff, managing equipment and supply purchases, and maintaining accurate records.
This role supervises 8–16 direct reports within the animal care staff. Support provided for research projects has a direct impact on program operations. The position has delegated authority for routine purchasing and provides ideas to the Program Manager on major purchasing decisions.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide daily oversight, communication, training, coaching, and leadership to the animal care staff.
• Conduct facility rounds and troubleshoot equipment issues, ensuring facilities are well-maintained, equipment functions according to specifications, and staff responsibilities are completed as assigned.
• Deliver researcher training and facility orientations.
• Participate in SOP writing, candidate interviews, and animal resource program meetings and functions.
Competencies Required:
• Knowledge of supervision, staff development, and training practices.
• Understanding of principles, practices, and procedures within the laboratory animal field.
This position typically operates independently on assigned tasks, providing updates to the Program Manager as needed. The role includes directing, delegating, and managing the work of technical service staff.
The individual in this position leads the day-to-day operations of the animal care team and must foster a collaborative environment, motivating staff to function as a cohesive unit.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required for daily interaction with animal care staff, departmental team members, and researchers. Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., email and word processing) is essential. The role also involves presenting information to staff through various methods, including formal presentations and hands-on training.
The position requires the ability to develop and implement new techniques for effectively leading and training animal care staff.
Knowledge of Lean Management is preferred.


Experience Level:  3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted

Job Type:  Full Time

Salary:  The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $56,200.00 - $81,500.00.
